Breaking Boundaries pt 2

Time-lapse photograph of the installation

Richard Ankrom installed a freeway sign, something he called ‘Guerilla Public Service’  He was not asked to, he was not paid to, and what he did was illegal.
It was however beneficial, and even after the authorities found out, they kept the sign.

Was this graphic design? Definitely, some might say, how could it not be? They might ask.

But I am not so sure. He considers himself an artist, not a graphic designer and then there is the question whether he did this as part of his practice, or was this simply something he did because it bothered him. At what point do designers stop being designers or is everything influenced by our practice and craft?
